Belonging to a very small group of avant-garde artists who left mainland China for Europe and the United States in the 1980s, Zhang creates projects ranging from intimate works on paper to large indoor and outdoor installations. His work combines traditional Chinese philosophy and aesthetics with Western art concepts to explore contemporary issues.
