In-Hyung Kim’s recent series of large works continue to explore the vegetal motifs and romantic vein pursued in the paintings exhibited in her solo exhibition at API in 2001. Dark vines appear from a green bramble or mist–purplish red or yellow buds emerge from jagged pods–while bright areas in the paintings’ backgrounds suggest that these secluded tangles of vegetation have been momentarily caught in the headlights of a car making a turn on a remote road. A dramatic difference with the new work is how the each of the two series of five paintings functions as a suite of paintings. The suites do not explore specific narratives, yet they are suggestive of a multiplicity of narratives. Studying the paintings one can easily imagine a stream of tales of magic, tragedy, beauty or loss spinning from them. These works are larger than most of In-Hyung’s paintings and the way she maximizes value contrasts and the interplay of tangled black line with ineffable form and a few select colors further enhances each painting’s impact. In 1994, API brought the work of In-Hyung Kim to New York City for her first exhibition in the United States.
In-Hyung Kim, a Korean-born artist, who has been living and working in Paris since 1978, was educated at L’ Academie Grande Chaumiere Charpentier, L’ Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux Arts, and L’ Ecole Nationale Superieure des Arts Decoratifs in Paris.
